Great Inagua

shutterstock_269357873The third biggest island in the Bahamas is called Great Inagua. The island lies around 60 miles from the tip of Cuba and is one of the biggest producers of sea salt. Great Inagua is also the home of Lake Windsor, which takes up nearly a quarter of the island. With a population of just under one thousand people, this is definitely a vacation destination your neighbor probably won’t have visited.

The capital city, “Matthew Town,” is named after the 19th century governor of the Bahamas, George Matthews, and the island happens to have one of the most famous bird sanctuaries in the world—with over 85,000 birds including the Inagua woodstar, the Bahama pintail, the brown pelican and, most notably, the West Indian flamingo.

Near the main island lies an uninhabited island called Little Inagua, which is occupied only by herds of feral goats and donkeys. Little Inagua is most notable for its protective reef—a reef that stops all boats from getting too close to the main island, extending up to a mile out from the island in all directions. In addition to the various exotic birds, visitors can see endangered freshwater turtles, and when accompanied by guides, travellers can explore Inagua’s limestone caves and enjoy fabulous beaches and snorkeling.

It is Little Inagua that holds the attention of seasoned divers, though, with many different treasure-laden ships destroyed by the reef through the years. The Santa Rosa was lost in 1599 and may be its most famous victim. The British HMS Statira and HMS Lowestoffe were lost in the early 1800s, and the French lost their Le Count De Paix in 1713.

Henri_ChristopheVery little is actually known about Henri Christophe’s childhood. Some say that he was born on Grenada Island, a small nation in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles; some say that he was the son of a freeman. His father, also named Christophe, was by all accounts transported from West Africa or Central West Africa to Saint Domingue. A place we now know as Haiti.

It is known that in 1779, Christophe served with the French military as a drummer boy with a regiment described as gens de couleur in the American Revolution. The gens de couleur regiment fought at the Siege of Savannah in what is now the state of Georgia. In 1788, Georgia would become the fourth state admitted into the original thirteen colonies of the United States of America.

After the American Revolution, Christophe returned to Saint Domingue where he is reported to have worked in many occupations—most famously as a waiter, mason, sailor and stable boy. He also managed a hotel restaurant in Cap-Français, then the capital of Saint-Domingue, that served the wealthy French slave-holders from the surrounding plantations.

By August 1791, the Africans at Saint Domingue had rebelled France. The name they would eventually choose for their new nation would be “Haiti.”

Christophe, who became a hero during the Haitian Revolution, fought with the famous Francois-Dominique Toussaint L’Ouverture—the great military leader who led Haiti to freedom. Eventually, Christophe became his brigadier general, and although L’Ouverture was captured by French agents in 1802 and deported, the revolution continued. Over the next thirteen years, the Africans would meet the French in battle many times and eventually won their freedom. Haiti became the first independent black republic in the west in 1804.

Even though their battle was won—the country was split in two. The north was presided over by Christophe and the south was headed by Alexander Pétion. It took until 1807 for Christophe to be elected president of the nation. He led the country as president for four years before he proclaimed Haiti a republic nation—and he himself became king. He was henceforth known as Henri I.

He continued as monarch until his death in 1820. The facts are still not clear about his death—but the most common story is that Christophe suffered a stroke and committed suicide.

Tradition and rumors still run rampant about Henri Christophe. One of the most long-lasting is that he built a summer retreat at the Northeast Point of Great Inagua. Many ships have sunk in that area—and two of the most famous are the Santa Rose and the Infanta—two Spanish galleons. It is said that it is here that Henri Christophe laid his treasure to rest. Many would-be treasure hunters still comb the area in the hopes of finding it.

cesarOne of the most fearsome pirates was called Black Caesar. Together with his band of ex-slave pirates, he stalked the Florida Keys.
According to accounts from the time, Black Caesar started life as a respected African tribal chief. He was known throughout his nation as a man of formidable strength, intelligence and for being huge in size. He was one of the last tribal chiefs to be captured by slave traders—and was only caught when he and twenty-five of his warriors were trapped on a slave ship by a slave trader who had shown the chief his watch. Contemporary accounts report that Black Caesar was promised more objects if he went to the boat. When Caesar arrived on the boat, he discovered the trap and tried to fight his way back to shore. Many of his warriors were killed in the fight, and eventually, the well-prepared sailors managed to take Caesar down below in chains.
As the slave trader’s boat neared the coast of Florida, a huge storm threatened to sink it. A sailor, friendly to Black Caesar, sneaked below decks to free him, and the two of them forced the captain and his unwitting crew into a corner at gunpoint and boarded one of the longboats with supplies. The wind was blowing in the right direction, and the longboat hit the shore. They were the only survivors.
Soon, they started to use their longboat to lure passing ships. They posed as survivors of a shipwreck and sailed out to ships that came into their path. As soon as they got close to these ships, they would bring out their guns and make demands. Their threats were taken seriously, and over several years, the sailor and Caesar amassed a vast fortune, which was buried on Elliot Key.
When Caesar and the sailor fell out over a woman looted from one of the vessels, their friendship fell apart. Caesar was forced to kill the sailor—and took the poor woman for his own.
As word of his operation spread, Black Caesar started to attract more pirates, and soon he had the firepower and numbers to attack ships on the open seas. He was smart enough never to face a militarized convoy and looked specifically for stragglers to engage. He also made excellent use of Caesar Creek and other inlets that ran between Elliot and Old Rhodes Keys.
It is rumored that he had a harem on his island with over 150 women seized from ships. He also had a prison camp where he kept prisoners for ransom. Although many have tried to find his treasure—no treasure has ever been found on his island.
Caesar left Biscayne Bay to join Blackbeard in the early 18th century. After Blackbeard’s death at the hands of Lieutenant Robert Maynard, Black Caesar was captured by the colonial authorities, convicted of piracy and hanged in Williamsburg, Virginia.
